About the Test

The PTE Academic is a two-hour computer-based exam designed to assess your Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening skills. On test day, you’ll complete the exam using a computer and headset in a secure Pearson test center.
The test is divided into clearly structured modules:
Speaking & Writing — combined into one session
Reading — standalone module
Listening — standalone module
Across these modules, you’ll encounter a mix of question types: multiple-choice, essay responses, re-telling lectures, summarizing spoken text, reading aloud, selecting missing words, and more. Every task is designed to measure your ability to communicate in real academic and everyday settings.
The PTE test features both native and non-native accents, reflecting real-world communication from films, TV, and international conversations. Content is based on authentic academic and general topics, including summaries, charts, excerpts, and practical scenarios.

Speaking & Writing
Introduce yourself in 30 seconds. While not scored, it may be sent to institutions along with your score report
Read a short paragraph aloud. Tests pronunciation, fluency, and content. Helps develop reading and speaking simultaneously.
Listen to a sentence and repeat it exactly. This task is high-scoring and tests listening, memory, and speaking fluency.
Describe an image (graph, chart, diagram, etc.) within 40 seconds. Assesses your ability to organize and express visual information.
Listen to a lecture (audio or video), take notes, and summarize it in your own words. Assesses listening comprehension and oral fluency.
Listen to a question and respond with a short answer (1–2 words). Focuses on general knowledge and listening accuracy.
You are presented with a real-life situation (e.g., a colleague being late or a customer complaint) and must respond in 30 seconds after 20 seconds of preparation. Tests practical communication, tone, and clarity of response.
You’ll read short statements from multiple people on a topic. After 20 seconds of preparation, you’ll have 40 seconds to summarize the different views presented. This task tests your ability tosynthesize ideas and communicate objectively.
Read a passage and write a one-sentence summary (5-75 words) in 10 minutes. Tests both reading and writing skills.
Write a 200–300 word essay in 20 minutes. You are scored on content, structure, vocabulary, grammar, and coherence.
Reading
Drag and drop words into the correct blanks in a passage. Tests vocabulary, grammar, and contextual understanding.
Read a passage and choose more than one correct answer. This task penalizes for incorrect options.
Put scrambled text boxes in the correct logical order. This evaluates reading comprehension and logical structure.
Choose the correct word from a dropdown for each blank in a passage. Tests grammar and vocabulary.
Select only one correct answer to a question about the passage. Tests reading comprehension.
Listening
Listen to a short audio and write a 50–70 word summary within 10 minutes. Assesses listening and writing skills.
Listen to a recording and select all correct answers. Tests listening for detail and understanding of the main idea.
A transcript appears with missing words. Listen and type the missing words as you hear them.
Listen to a recording and choose the summary that best matches what you heard. Tests main idea comprehension.
Listen to an audio clip and choose one correct answer. Focuses on detail or inference.
Listen to a sentence where the final word is replaced by a beep. Choose the missing word from a list.
You’ll read a transcript while listening to the audio. Click on the words that are different from what you hear. Tests listening and reading simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions
PTE Academic: Used for study, work, and migration to countries like Australia, UK, USA, and Canada (study only). It focuses on academic English, with tasks like essay writing, summarizing texts, and retelling lectures
PTE Core: Approved by IRCC for Canadian immigration (PR, Express Entry, work). It features real-life and workplace English, including tasks like writing emails, responding to situations, and summarizing group discussions.
Both release results in 1–2 days, and can only be taken at authorized test centers. Choose the test based on your visa or study goals.
The PTE exam is a 2-hour, computer-based English test that assesses Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening skills. The exam consists of three main sections:

PTE Academic is scored automatically based on complex algorithms trained by testing a data sample of over 10,000 students with over 120 native languages—a granular score scales from 10 to 90 to mimic the real PTE scores.
